The Clinic of Gastroenterohepatology is a unique institution in Republic of Macedonia, obtaining necessary health care in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology for more than two million inhabitants.

Founded in 1946 as part of Internal Medicine, the gastroenterology department became an independent Clinic in 1976.

The main areas of expertise are effective diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and hepatology disorders for in- and outpatients. Around 20 thousand patients pass through the units every year. With a capacity of 53 beds, the clinic has a total of about 2000 inpatient cases per year, with a median stay of 5,5 days.
As a public health care institution, services are provided through 6 different units, which are highly specialized according to latest medical achievements. Three of the units are for inpatients including intensive care-unit, the remaing are outpatient ambulance, endoscopy and ultrasound units.

Endoscopy and ultrasound units are divided in subunits for upper and lower endoscopy, for diagnostic and interventional procedures (endoscopic and sonographic). Using this kind of organization, all necessary investigations and treatment options for diseases of the digestive system are provided.

At a glance the Clinic provides following services:

1. Ultrasound (US) of abdominal organs
2. Duplex and color-Doppler US of abdominal vessels
3. Ultrasound guided abdominal biopsies
4. Drainage procedures of different fluid collections in the abdominal organs/cavity
5. Biliary drainage procedures
6. Biliogastrostomy, cystogastrostomy procedures, applying endoprosthesis under US control.
7. Ultrasound guided percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (USPEIT) of small tumors
8. Upper endosonography, EUS
9. Lower endosonography, EUS and BUS
10. Upper GI Endoscopy, Duodenoscopy
11. Upper endoscopic biopsy, polypectomy
12. Endoscopic hemostasis of upper GI bleedings
13. Endoscopic extraction of foreign bodies
14. Insertion of  percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube
15. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP)
16. Sigmoidoscopy and Colonoscopy
17. Lower endoscopic biopsy, polypectomy
18. Rubber band ligation of hemorrhoidal bleeding
19. Ambulatory 24 hours pH-metry
20. Application of enteral and parenteral nutrition

Due to the broad spectrum of procedures yearly around 10 000 ultrasound investigations, more than 5000 gastroscopies, around 2000 sigmoidoscopies and colonoscopies are performed. The number of interventional procedures under US guidance (biopsies, drainages, endoprosthesis application) approaches 1200, and the number of procedures under fluoroscopic control (ERCP, endoprosthesis application) reaches 350.

Endoscopic therapeutic procedures, like polypectomies or endoscopic hemostasis, reach a number of 300 pts per year. Besides the extensive daily clinical practice, the Clinic is part of the Medical Faculty of "St.Cyril and Methodius University", and participates in the permanent education of medical staff. Education and training of nurses, technicians, radiologists, medical students and doctors is carried out on a regular basis as well as organization of scientific meetings, workshops, courses and gastroenterology schools on different levels.
