History
University Clinic of Gastroenterohepatology is the only institution of its kind in the country, providing necessary health care in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology for more than two million inhabitants.
The Clinic was founded in 1946 as a department within the previously established Department of Internal Medicine. The Department of gastroenterohepatology became independent Clinic in 1976.
The main areas of expertise are effective diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and hepatological disorders and conditions, both for hospitalized and outpatient patients. Each year, about 20 thousand patients are evaluated in different units at the clinic . In the period from January 2013 to January 2016, according to data from the national system for electronic health records, at the Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology, there were more than 53,000 outpatient examinations and consultations. With a capacity of 48 beds, two of which are part of the apartment accommodation, the clinic has a total of 2,000 hospitalized patients per year, with an average length of stay of 5.5 days per patient.
As a public health facility, services are provided through 6 different units that are highly specialized according to the latest medical advances. Three of the units are intended for the hospitalized patients, including an intensive care unit, while the other are designed for outpatient examinations: unit for endoscopic examinations and an ultrasound unit.
Operating units for endoscopy and ultrasound are divided into subunits for upper digestive and lower digestive endoscopy, both for diagnostic and for interventional procedures (endoscopic and sonographic). Thanks to this type of organization, the Clinic provides all the necessary diagnostic examinations and therapeutic options for the treatment of diseases of the digestive system.
Thanks to this wide range of procedures, we perform on average about 10,000 ultrasound examination per year, over 5,000 gastroscopic procedures, over 2,000 sigmoidoscopic and colonoscopic procedures. The number of interventional sonographic procedures under ultrasound control (biopsies, drainages, application of percutaneous endoprosthesis) are close to 1,200 per year, and the number of interventional endoscopic procedures under fluoroscopic control – ERCP and esophageal interventions in terms of treatment of patients with stenosis and achalasia with techniques including bougie or balloon dilatation are around 570-620 per year. From this, 450-500 are anual ERCP procedures, and the interventions of the esophagus under x-ray control are 120 anually.
The number of endoscopic therapeutic procedures, like endoscopic polypectomy or gastrointestinal bleeding in hemostasis, exceeds the number of 400 patients per year. Beside the extensive clinical practice, the Clinic for Gastroenterohepatology is part of the Medical Faculty of the University “St. Cyril and Methodius” and participates in continuing education of medical staff. The health providers at the clinis conduct regularly education and training of nurses, technicians, radiologists, medical students and doctors. Scientific meetings, workshops, courses and gastroenterological schools at different levels are as well organized.

One of the primary tasks will be improving clinical standards which would promote the prevention, treatment and care of our patients with gastroenterohepatological diseases. This objective will be realized by improving the conditions at the clinic and modernization of equipment, as well as providing employee education and support of clinical research.
